Siler City is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population is right at 8,747 within corporate limits and 14,005 within corporate limits and ETJ. The town was the retirement home and burial location of Frances Bavier (1902–1989) an American actress, best remembered for her role as Aunt Bee on The Andy Griffith Show, a television sitcom in the 1960s set in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina.

Geography

Siler City is located at the center of the state at (35.726030, -79.462962)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.08 square miles (15.7 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,966 people, 2,386 households, and 1,617 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,418.6 people per square mile (547.8/km²). There were 2,526 housing units at an average density of 514.4 per square mile (198.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 50.82% White, 19.67% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 26.51% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any nationality comprised 39.33% of the population. The community's Hispanic population is projected to reach 52.3% by 2012, which is due partially to illegal immigration and has spurred on both anti- and pro-immigration rallies in the town.[4]

There were 2,386 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.29.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 12.9% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,651, and the median income for a family was $36,034. Males had a median income of $21,010 versus $18,570 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,947. About 10.2% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.0% of those under age 18 and 14.9% of those age 65 or over.

Airport

Siler City Municipal Airport (5W8) is a single runway airport 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of downtown Siler City. The airport is used both by local residents and as a refueling stop for transiting military and general aviation aircraft. [5][6]
